The most common reason is fibroids, followed by thickening of the uterine lining and abnormal vaginal bleeding that does not respond to treatment.
Irregular or heavy periods, pelvic pain, a mass that can be felt, frequent urination and constipation may indicate a fibroid that needs surgery. When surgery is planned for fibroids, the first choice is to remove only the fibroid; in cases that have been left too late, this may not be enough and the uterus may need to be removed.
