Stages of pregnancy

First trimester (weeks 1-13): the organs form. Nausea, tiredness and breast tenderness are common. The first scan, blood tests and combined screening take place.

Second trimester (weeks 14-27): the baby grows quickly and movements begin to be felt. The anomaly scan and glucose tolerance test happen now.

Third trimester (weeks 28-40): the baby gains weight and the lungs mature. Visits become more frequent and birth plans are discussed.

Sizes and weights are averages; every baby develops at its own pace. Your baby's growth is best assessed by examination and ultrasound.
