What matters is the time from the first day of one period to the first day of the next; how many days the bleeding lasts does not matter. Ovulation occurs about 14 days before the expected period. In a 28-day cycle, ovulation falls on day 14, and the two days before and after are also taken into account. In a 30-day cycle, because the last 14 days stay fixed, ovulation falls on day 16, so days 14 to 18 are taken as the reference.
During this window, intercourse is recommended for those who want a pregnancy, and protection is needed for those who do not. If cycles vary, for example 28 days one month and 35 the next, the calculation becomes difficult; in that case, the video notes that ovulation tests sold in pharmacies can be used from day 12 of the cycle.
